History of HTM
HTM as it is commonly known was primarily developed in the UK by Mary Ray in the early 90’s as a means of showing the general public how interesting heelwork can be. Since the early days, others have joined Mary in promoting this fantastic sport.
Peter Lewis and Rugby Dog Club have successfully run the annual Coventry show, considered to be the top event of the year for those who compete, and the entries have risen year on year. From only having one show a year, we now have several around the country. This along with the development of the Paws 'N' Music Association has helped the ever increasing popularity of the sport. We now have our own HTM stars, people such as Mary Ray, Linda Topliss, Tina Humphrey, Kath Hardman, Paula Ackary and of course Attila. All of whom have developed their own unique style. HTM has moved on from being a sport that is just about heelwork. We now have routines that are purely freestyle, meaning that they do not rely on the dog walking in the heelwork position. Freestyle routines allow those who do not work in obedience to compete on an equal footing with those that do, as it also allows for a different expression of our relationship with dogs and dog training. Many competitors incorporate both HTM and Freestyle into their routines.
